How We Met...
In 2017, both Nathan and Marie were in their freshman year at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. Both were already in their Second semester, Nathan studying to become a Diesel Mechanic, while Marie was studying Fashion Design. Although they attended the same school, they were in completely different programs and buildings — their paths likely would have never crossed naturally.
Since neither of them were originally from the London area — Nathan being from Brampton and Marie from Mississauga — they both turned to dating apps to meet new people in the London area. Somehow, they ended up swiping right on each other.
What started as conversations through the app quickly turned into exchanging phone numbers and connecting through Instagram, Snapchat, and even Skype. After weeks of talking and getting to know one another, they finally met in person — the beginning of everything that followed.
Their first date began in the early morning hours of Valentine’s Day in 2017, when the two stayed up talking on Snapchat until 7:00AM while Nathan played CS:GO and Marie worked on last-minute assignments. Later that day, they had planned to meet for lunch, but when Marie ended up on a class trip to Toronto and wouldn’t return to London until later that evening, Nathan told her he would wait until she got back.
When Marie finally returned that evening, Nathan picked her up in his white Mazda Speed3. Nervous and excited, Marie opened the passenger door – only for Nathan to jokingly yell, “WRONG CAR!” Embarrassed, Marie immediately shouted “SORRY!” and slammed the door shut, until Nathan rolled down the passenger window laughing and told her to come back. Marie walked back to his vehicle and replied “Not funny,” before the two laughed together. From there, the nerves quickly disappeared.
As broke collaged students on Valentine’s Day, they decided Walmart was the perfect start to their date. They wandered around buying snacks and energy drinks before driving through London, listening to music, singing songs together, getting lost in neighbourhoods with huge houses, and talking about the future they hoped to build one day.
Before the night ended, they stopped at a Tim Hortons for drinks and talked until closing. When Nathan dropped Marie back at her dorm, she smiled and said, “It was fun getting lost with you.” From that night on, they became inseparable – what started as a late-night Valentine’s Day drive became the beginning of their forever.
Our First Date...
On September 1st, Nathan planned a surprise day for Marie that would become one of their most unforgettable moment. Earlier that morning, he told her they needed to leave by noon for a reservation, though he refused to share any other details. Even without knowing the plan, Marie had a feeling something important was about to happen.
The two drove to downtown Toronto, where Nathan surprised Marie with a reservation at Le Petit Chef — a dining experience they had wanted to try ever since seeing it online in 2023. Since they arrived early, they spent the afternoon wandering the city, stopping at Korean grocery stores and grabbing bubble tea before heading to dinner.
The evening at Le Petit Chef was filled with laughter, conversation, and entertainment as they enjoyed the unique experience together. After dinner, they headed toward the Harbourfront in Toronto as the sun began to set. At this point, Nathan seemed anxious, and it quickly became clear something was off. With construction, closures, and limited access, the original plan wasn’t working as expected, but Nathan made the best of it, walked around the area together before continuing on to their next destination.
They eventually drove to their favourite getaway spot: The Pearle Hotel & Spa in Burlington. Once they arrived, Nathan let Marie walk into the hotel room first. Waiting inside were roses, a wedding-edition Pikachu plushies, and Polaroid photos capturing memories from throughout their seven-and-a-half-year relationship.
When Marie turned around, Nathan was down on one knee asking, “Will you marry me?”
Marie was shocked and speechless, all she said was "WTF" and then tears streaming down her face as she said yes. Nathan later apologized that the proposal hadn’t gone exactly as planned, but in that moment, none of it mattered.
What started as a perfect to imperfect evening became something even more meaningful — a private and deeply personal memory they would cherish forever, ending the night with a stop at an ice cream parlour to celebrate together.
